“Better marketing in less time”
Estimated read time: 2 minute & 0 seconds
It took me 3 months.
But I figured out why people enjoy running.
And how it relates to your business.

👇
I hated running.
Until I ran 12 miles last weekend.
Every time I ran 3+ miles.
My knee injury would flair up.
It made running painful and miserable.
”Why do people do this?!”
But I kept going.
- Performing rehab exercises.
- Practicing gait patterns.
- Showing up on run days.
I had to get through what Seth Godin calls The Dip.
The valley of suck.
The long grueling slog in the beginning of EVERY journey.
Everything is exciting in the beginning.
- A YouTube channel.
- A TikTok account.
- A podcast show.
- A newsletter.
- Running.
It’s not goals that separate winners from losers.
It’s the ability to stick it out when it gets hard.
Embrace the dip… you got this.
There is a difference between being able to run.
And being a runner.
Being able to run means if a bear started chasing you.
You might be able to get away.
Being a runner is an identity.
It’s how you define yourself.
Now that I’ve put in the reps of running.
I now call myself a “runner.”
Which has changed my behaviors.
- I stretch more.
- I drink electrolytes.
- I talk to other runners.
- I own running shoes.
The business version of an identity?
Branding.
Take New Balance for example.
What behavior does new balance encourage?
- White shoes.
- High socks.
- Cell phone clips.
- Bluetooth headsets.
- Dad bods.
- Walking.
Be careful with what you identify with.
You might end up with a cell phone clip.
Your identity becomes your personal brand.
I used to think running was a waste of time.
But it’s because I was only looking at the physical.
Let’s be honest.
When we’re talking about the usual fitness goals.
- Look good naked.
- Participate in life.
- Prevent injuries.
- Live longer.
I think we can agree that weight training takes the cake.
But where things get interesting.
Is the mental benefits of running.
Just once, I’d love to have a chat bubble above my head as I run.
The back-and-forth banter is laughable at times.
A constant battle between wanting to quit and cheering myself on.
Oddly enough… that’s exactly how business feels.
A ping pong match of fear and excitement.
Running has taught me how to battle my inner demons.
Both on the trail and off the trail.
Turns out running isn’t a complete waste of time.
Take home point…
- Embrace the dip... it’s part of the process.
- Your identity = your personal brand.
- Running teaches mental fortitude.
